4. The consumer interface

Some energy efficiency programs are being aimed directly at the consumer. Consumers are now able to assess appliances and equipment information prior to purchase and make appropriate choices due to:

  • Appliance labelling/mandatory energy performance (Minimum Energy Performance Standards, or MEPS)
  • Energy Disclosure.

5. Carbon price

Carbon pricing is a scheme designed to tie costs to gas emissions. Emissions trading schemes tax the use of energy and resources that contribute towards greenhouse climate change.

The programs in place are changing and there is much debate about existing and/ or proposed market mechanisms.
