Section 1: Energy Management
Australia’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions

2. Stationary energy

Stationary energy is the combined use of electricity and gas for industrial, commercial and residential purposes. The largest emissions result from electricity due to both our large consumption and the carbon emissions from coal, our primary source.

Stationary energy is the largest and fastest growing sector in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. Key points are:

  • In 1990 Stationary Energy emissions were 196 Mt CO2-e
  • By 2004 Stationary Energy emissions were 280 Mt CO2-e
    • they had increased by 43 percent (84 Mt CO2-e), and
    • reached approximately half of Australia’s total emissions in 2004.

Electricity contributed 70 percent of stationary energy emissions in 2004. Key points are:

  • Between 1990 and 2004, emissions from electricity increased by 51 percent
  • Emissions from electricity generation grew by 3.1 per cent in 2004.

Australian energy consumption is forecast to increase by 50%
in the period between 2001 and 2020.
